An interesting Interview with Novo Ministries from OKC
We had a chat with Valerie from Novo Ministries who answered our questions and shared some thoughts and what their humble mission really is.Choice Solutions Roofing & Exteriors, local roofing company from OKC cares about our local communities and their goals, therefore we’re thankful for having another interview, this time with Novo.
Here is a little light on what they shared with us:
To begin with, we would like you to briefly tell us about your organization
Novo is a faith-based organization that exists to see real and lasting life-change in children and youth in need. We work to see communities restored, statistics reversed, and lives changed forever through the power of Jesus Christ.
- What do you do exactly?
And what was the reason that encouraged you to start this organization?
We began this mission because of the thousands of children in OKC that are living hopeless lives in the midst of destructive cycles. One day the statistics of children in poverty in our city became names and stories that we could no longer ignore. We facilitate and support mentoring programs that partner caring adults with children and youth in need to bring HOPE into their lives. We also train other groups and organizations to effectively reach children and youth through their programs. Through mentorship, boys and girls are learning that someone cares for them and there is HOPE for today and tomorrow.
- What motivates you?
Describe your mission passion
We believe that knowing Jesus changes everything. We have seen the difference HOPE makes in a child’s life. When they learn of the God who created and loves them, they no longer live a purposeless life. When a mentor consistently shows up for them and speaks love and HOPE into their life, they blossom. We believe that regardless of race or socioeconomic status, every child should have that opportunity.
- Tell us about your goals
Ultimately we want every child to have one caring adult other than a parent that mentors them and one good friend that loves and follows Jesus. We also want to educate the non-urban community about the inner-city, train caring individuals to impact the lives of children and youth, impact the community through program and partnerships, and mentor and empower children and youth in need to be productive, contributing adults.
- What was the hardest/toughest moment you had to deal with?
Obstacles you faced when dealing with bureaucracy, permits, funding, etc. Something you would like to point out to anyone who might be starting their own organization.
The worst moments we face are when we have to turn down services to someone because of a lacking of funding, volunteers, or partners. There is nothing worse than walking home a crying child who doesn’t understand why they don’t get to come to a program because we didn’t have enough volunteers to safely allow for all the children to attend that night. Or a parent yet again asking when we will return to their complex and resume programming when we still don’t have a community partner to adopt that site.
- What was the most fulfilling moment that happened to you?
There are so many of these! The day a former program attendee fills out a volunteer application to serve the boys and girls in their own neighborhood is always a highlight. Hearing from parents about how grateful they are that we came to teach their child the Bible and the difference it is making in their behavior at home and school is also extremely fulfilling. When one of our volunteers or donors talks about the joy they receive from giving back to their community is another that comes to mind.
- What separates you from the rest? Why you?
We have 15 years experience of running programs in the inner-city. With that experience as well as the expertise and skill set our staff bring to the table, we provide a level of service both to the community and other organizations unmatched currently in our sector. We also have standards that rival those of any other program or opportunity for children in need. We have outcomes and evaluations that support our approach as well.
- Do you have any upcoming events in the forthcoming months?
We run programs weekly and those are always open for a guided tour with advance notice. We also hold small gatherings as part of our SparkHOPE movement to share the mission of Novo with others. The scheduling of these are based on host availability.
- What is it that you love most about what you do?
Truly making a difference in the life of a child and furthermore in their family. And not just a difference today or even one that will impact the future of our city. But impacting a child for eternity – that is what drives us to keep going daily.
- What is the biggest challenge you’re faced with today?
We don’t need to convince anyone there is a need. Anyone living in our city can see the needs daily if they are looking for them. It does seem like we have to convince people to care about the need and to take the steps to get involved personally sometimes. 🙁
- Anything else you would like to add?
Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to share about what we do and put a spotlight on the children and youth right here in our community that need advocates!
