RSVP of Central Oklahoma, OK (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) Interview
With over 25 years of professional experience, Choice Solutions Roofing and Exteriors from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, has been working with clients from many different lines of work. Also, we have been collaborating with different non-profit and non-commercial organizations, and we admire their contribution to the community, but we are also familiar with their struggles.
Therefore, we would like to share their everyday’s problems with everyone, so maybe someone could help them with a good idea. Today, we took a short interview with the RSVP of Central Oklahoma (Retired Senior Volunteer Program). We’ll present their mission in the text below, so please reconsider if you could join and help!
RSVP of Central Oklahoma (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) has served our nonprofit community and older adults since 1973. RSVP enriches the lives of 650 older adults by connecting them with 130 local nonprofits in need of volunteer support. We also have a signature program called RSVP Provide-A-Ride, where our older adult volunteer drives provide one-on-one, arm-through-arm medical transportation for low-income elderly persons who are no longer able to drive.
What do you do exactly?
RSVP is a part of Senior Corps through the Corporation for National and Community Service. Senior Corps was created to provide older adults an opportunity to share their skills, time and passion with nonprofit agencies to help them meet their missions and the needs of their clients. RSVP Provide-A-Ride was created in 1995 to help low-income elderly persons remain healthy and live in their own homes as long as possible.
What motivates you?
Older adults want to remain active and make a difference in our community….and that’s what RSVP does for them! Our 2016 outcome measurements report: 99% of our volunteers state RSVP activities enhance their sense of purpose in life, 97% stated RSVP involvement has enhanced their self-value, and 98% reported RSVP involvement improves their overall quality of life. Regarding RSVP Provide-A-Ride, our 2016 client outcome measurements reflect:100% live more independently because of our services, 99% stated they keep their medical appointments more regularly, and 95% reported that the money they save by receiving our free transportation service enables them to buy groceries and medicine.

What was the hardest/toughest moment you had to deal with?
Biggest obstacle- walking into the position of executive director without a manual or succession plan in place. New organization advice: network with other nonprofit leaders, access RSVP and the United Way Volunteer Center for volunteer support, and secure sustainable donations for overhead and advertising your program.
What was the most fulfilling moment that happened to you?
Being chosen as a finalist for the OK Center for Nonprofits “ONE Award” in 2015. This award recognizes nonprofits that exhibit strong leadership while meeting critical needs in our community. With over 1800 nonprofit organizations in the state of Oklahoma, being chosen as one of the five finalists is huge!
What separates you from the rest? Why you?
Passion for older adults!
Do you have any upcoming events in the forthcoming months?
2018 April- volunteer recognition luncheon for our 650 older adult volunteers.
What is it that you love most about what you do?
Our older adult volunteers are a special breed…their strong desire to help others in need…and then they tell me that they are receiving more benefits by being a volunteer than the people they are serving (tutoring kids, feeding the homeless, driving elderly persons to their medical appointments, etc.)
What is the biggest challenge you’re faced with today?
Biggest challenge I have is spreading the word about RSVP without an advertising budget. We rely on print/electronic media feature stories, speaking engagements, radio talk shows, etc. to help others learn about our program and services.
Anything else you would like to add?
I commend you for your desire to help a local nonprofit organization become better known in our community. Kudos to you. Lucky duck for whoever you choose!
